Chase
Chase strummed his guitar as he listened to Jackson sing. He never got tired of the man’s deep, rich voice. And the haunting melody of the song they were working on always stirred deep emotions within him. Within both of them, judging by the faint tremor in Jackson’s voice.
They’d been sleeping together for a couple of weeks, but Chase felt like it had been much longer. The sex—the intimacy, the physical closeness, the chemistry behind all of it—was amazing, no doubt about it. But there was definitely more to it. There was a deeper connection there, one that Chase had never felt before with anyone else.
“Everything okay?”
He opened his eyes to see Jackson’s head cocked to the side, his bright blue eyes clouded with concern. Chase belatedly realized he’d been so caught up in the moment, the music, and his own thoughts that he’d completely stopped playing along on the guitar.
“Yeah, sorry, I was just…” Chase smiled and rolled his eyes as he felt his cheeks begin to flush. “I was just thinking about… stuff.”
“Anything you feel like talking about?”
Yeah, all of it.
“Nah, nothing important.” Chase smiled. “I really like this song, though. It always makes me feel really…”
He wasn’t sure what the word was. Or why he was afraid to put his feelings into words. Well, aside from the fact that it would probably just mess everything up. He had a good thing going with Jackson. And even though they shared a lot of their thoughts and feelings about other things, and they definitely had a deeper connection than “just friends,” there really hadn’t been any talk about where things between them might be going. Or if, in fact, if was even going anywhere.
“Yeah,” Jackson agreed, even though Chase hadn’t said exactly how it made him feel. “It’s one of those things that I’ve had in the back of my mind for… God, for years, but every time I tried to put it on paper, or to even put words to it, it just gets so heavy.”
“That’s a good word for it,” Chase said. “Heavy. But it’s definitely good. It might be a tough sell with the label, though.”
“Fuck those guys,” Jackson grumbled. “They wouldn’t know a good song if it bit them on the ass. They just want the same old bullshit.”
Chase nodded, but it wasn’t like Jackson needed his validation. He was right, of course, but the rub was that the “same old bullshit” was what sold. It’s what made money. It’s what people paid money for. So it didn’t matter whether Chase agreed with him or not. It wasn’t a battle that Jackson was likely to win with the people who mattered.
And it was part of the reason why Jackson hadn’t had a hit in so long. Chase had realized, through several of these conversations, that Jackson had just stopped caring what they wanted. And he’d stopped giving it to them. Even though Chase sort of respected the guts it took to stand on principle like
